In 2012, and for the sixth consecutive year, the British Museum has been the most visited institution in the United Kingdom.
The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (Alva), which records statistics of national museums, announced that in spite of a 4.7% drop in attendance, the institution attracted 5.6 million visitors in 2012, and still ranks first. After the British Museum, the Tate Modern benefited from the success of the Damien Hirst retrospective, which enabled it to welcome 5.3 million visitors and to record a 9% increase over the year.
Throughout the year 2012, the ensemble of British museums have recorded a 5.1% increase in their number of visitors, for a total of 92.1 million.
The most dynamic institution appears to be the Liverpool Museum, which welcomed 53% additional visitors with regard to last year, and established itself as the most visited museum outside London.
Among leading museums, Victoria & Albert has known its best year with a 16% increase in its number of visitors, meaning 3.2 million. This achievement is partly due to the success of the exhibition devoted to Hollywood costumes held in the fall of 2012. As for the National Portrait Gallery, Lucian Freud’s portraits enabled the welcome of 12% additional visitors, with a total of 2.1 million persons.
