“Zaatari is a syrian refugees camp in northern Jordan, situated at the border, by the city of Al-Mafraq. In two years, over 120.000 refugees fleeing the fights and the civil war in Syria had to settle in this camp, in the middle of the desert. In this 5 Km square piece of desert, 75% of the population are women and children. With nearly no men and women keeping in their tents, the camp seems inhabited only by the children.

The camp has grown as a middle size city with all the infrastructure needed for the population: schools, hospitals, water supply,… but also food and primary items distribution. The Syrians are resilient and shops and different kinds of services are now available along the 2km long “Champs-Elysée” street: cell phones, wedding dresses, snooker club, cyber café, cafes, …

But as the crisis in Syria seems to have no end, the problems in the camp are getting more acute: very high temperature in summer and freezing winter under the tent, water supply shortage, safety, …. This camp is no meant to last and the lonely solution is in Syria.”
