COLLECTION STEPHANIE PEYRISSAC

9 Avenue de Lamballe, 75016 Paris

March 9, 2024,

You probably know Victor Brauner, a unique figure of surrealism. Perhaps Jules Perahim (1914-2008) is less familiar to you than his compatriot Victor Brauner, but he is no less important. He is considered one of the great representatives of surrealism in Romania.

Both born in Romania, they took part in the artistic effervescence of Bucharest in their youth and collaborated on several non-conformist magazines, imbued with the Dada and surreal spirit.

Jules Perahim (1914-2008) represents one of the most remarkable figures of the Romanian avant-garde of the 1930s. He is known both for his collaboration with non-conformist, Dada-minded and surrealist magazines, Unu (the main contributor is Victor Brauner) and Alge (founded, among others, with the poet Gherasim Luca), as well as for his personal exhibitions and his virulent drawings published in social protest magazines and politics.

At the end of the 1960s, marked by the rise of national communism, Perahim leaves Romania, remakes his life and settles in Paris. His creation then took flight in the continuation of the dreams he had abandoned. He becomes the accomplished and prolific painter of a poetic and enigmatic work, of a sparkling imagination full of fantasy and humor.

Come and discover an exhibition of his works, oscillating between socialist realism, surrealism and expressive research until April 5, 2024 at the Stéphanie Peyrissac collection gallery.
