In her “Buddhist Bug Project,” Cambodian artist Anida Yoeu Ali explored her cultural heritage by staging a series of site-specific performances around Cambodia in a whimsical costume she calls the Buddhist Bug (or BBug). The costume can expand to nearly 100 feet in length, or compress into a tight coil. The bug’s appearance reflects Ali’s turmoil between Buddhism and Islam—the orange color is derived from the robes of Buddhist monks while the headpiece is inspired by the Muslim head covering, the hijab. “The Buddhist Bug Project” was created in collaboration with Studio Revolt.
