Californian artist Pae White has just arrived at Peckham’s South London Gallery with an installation made up of a 48 kilometre network of threads. Characterised by its transient nature, Pae’s work is often constructed from fragile materials that are utilised en masse to build large-scale sculptural works. Previous installations have include gold-lined popcorn kernels suspended from transparent thread and tapestries of billowing smoke plumes.

In this instance Pae’s threaded installation forms a dark cloud of criss-crossed black and purple across the gallery roof with individual threads trailing back to the wall where they spell out motivational super graphics, reading TIGER TIME and UNMATTRING, inspired by recent bouts of insomnia. It’s a beautiful, immersive installation that’s equally admirable for its conceptual motivations as for its complex construction. It’s also free, and who doesn’t love free things?
