The president of the Generalitat of Catalonia Artur Mas recently announced the forthcoming opening of a branch of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, one of the most famous museums in the world.
Indeed an agreement of collaboration has been signed between Artur Mas and the Russian Vice-Minister of Culture, Alla Manilova, in order to enhance the economic, touristic and cultural capitals of Barcelona and Catalonia. Mas added the presence of this branch of the Hermitage Museum would “complete the museum and cultural offer of the Catalan capital”. He also said that today over 65% of Russian tourists going to Spain this year have chosen Catalonia as their main destination, which justifies this decision. According to La Vanguardia, 7,400 sqm have been invested for this project, next to the marina “Port Vell”, within three historical industrial buildings of the 19th century.
The Hermitage Museum will celebrate its 250th anniversary in December 2014. Considered one of the greatest museums of the world, with the Louvre and the Prado, it hosts works by Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, Goya, Raphael, Velazquez, Michelangelo, Manet, Matisse and Rodin, among others.
