Michiel Ceulers at Mihai Nicodim Gallery
Belgian artist Michiel Ceulers (b.1986) impressive abstract work on display at Mihai Nicodim Gallery in Culver City California is something to reflect upon. Uninhibited work coming out of this very young Belgian artist shows a future for a long good carrier. Already making his way up the international art scene, Michiel Ceulers has a valid point when it comes to understanding his work. Emulating from a very structural environment, as we all know the Germanic way of thinking, the artist work is based on a tremendous amount of effort stating at the end that, anything you want to express is based on rules, even when you go against them. That’s why, at Nicodim Gallery, public can see gridded canvases as well as blured unstructured images.

“He strips the medium right down to its skeleton, peeling away all the unnecessary accouterments laden on poor painting by thousands of years to find out as best he can what the act can presently and personally mean. He endeavors to renovate the ancient practice with works wearing proudly their labors, sometimes singly and sometimes coupled together in handsome pairs. A rapid rigor reveals itself, unwinding through stripes and grids leaving the paintings at the end of the process curiously tender and refreshingly human”, is stated by the gallery curator.

Michiel Ceulers (b. 1986) lives and works in Brussels and Berlin. A recent resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, he was the youngest artist ever to be accepted in the program. In 2011, Ceulers was nominated for the Young Belgian Painters Award. He has had solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, London, Zurich and New York and is currently included in comprehensive survey “Tracing the Grid. The Grid in Art after 1945” at Kunst Museum Stuttgart.

Price ranges from 14,000 – 4,000 UDS.
