Mircea Lacatus (b. 1962, Gherla, Cluj County, Romania) graduated the Art High School in Arad (1981). He holds a B.A. in sculpture, restoration, and pedagogy from the National University of Arts in Bucharest (1989, class of Professor Vladimir Predescu). Soon after graduation, he moved to Vienna, Austria, where he lived and worked for 22 years. In 1993 he received his Master’s degree from the University of Vienna. During his Viennese years he also worked as a freelance artist for the Vienna Opera.
Since 1985, he has had numerous solo and group shows throughout Europe and the US.He has also been invited to participate in prestigious international symposiums in different countries (Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Israel, India, Japan). He is currently based in Huntsville, AL. In the last three years, he has taught as a guest artist at University of Alabama in Huntsville and Oakwood University. He has an art studio at Lowe Mill, in Huntsville.
Glenn Dasher, sculptor and Dean of Fine Arts, UAH (University of Alabama in Huntsville), wrote about Mircea Lacatus: “His sculptures display a wide variety of techniques. Not only are his works technically well executed, they are especially strong conceptually. Simple creations of ordinary stone are transformative and serve in his quest for rediscovering and finding expression in the “sacred” in our daily lives. His sources of inspiration are the legends and the great myths of mankind. Working within the long respected tradition of the surrealistic juxtaposition of disparate forms to create new meaning, Mircea Lacatus takes the effort further in blending the unique forms, historically associated with very different belief systems, creating beautiful and believable statements of remarkable clarity. (…) He gives his sculptures an air of timelessness, while being archaic and futuristic.”
