My short statement
I’m Jonathan Rochart, a 26-year-old French photographer and film-maker. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved telling stories, which is why I chose to study Animation and dramaturgy at the ERG school of graphic research in Brussels, Belgium. I’m currently working on my first short film with the support of Belgian production house Neon rouge.
For three years, I’ve been taking documentary photos of my travel companions, lovers and friends, like a sort of diary. I think I began taking photos of them the day I realized we wouldn’t be young forever. I feel as though photography has given me a tool to construct my memories.
My preface
Some young people set out in search of fixed points. These explorers cling to what still appears stable and constant on their planet: the sky, the sea, the land. The horizon. Those guides for want of absent heroes; forces more convincing than the gods; vanishing points through which to escape. The landmarks are reassuring – they endure. They represent what has come before, but what they have never known.
Curious and oblivious, the youngsters take hold of life like a backpack and set out in discovery of all that is near, of what is present yet forgotten.
