Dimitrios Antonitsis – Sarmale with ketchup
Galeria Sabot, etaj II
21 martie – 5 mai 2012

A sleek show fitting the sleek space of Sabot and breathing
contemporary air into the Transylvanian folklore

A graduate of the New York Film Academy and a former fashion photographer, Antonitsis is keenly aware of the different ways reality can be manipulated or exaggerated. (Tina Sotiriadi | /Art in America/, April 2002)

The Folklore, as a term of Dimitrios Antonitsis’ personal vocabulary, is invariably concerned with the practice of handcrafts. Always manifesting a soft spot for the discarded and the rejected, the artist easily fell for the triviality of Romanian fleamarket-stands, where he purchased used ceramic pots and vessels, woven rugs and bedspreads, and even some coarse wood-crafted decorative objects. These forsaken, modest artifacts became the chosen ingredients for his challenging task of pursuing a juicy aesthetical discourse and transforming them into his own contemporary dish.

The mundane titles “Sarmale with Ketchup” (for his solo show at Sabot), and “Panache de Papanași” (for the concomitant exhibition at the Museum of Art in Cluj-Napoca), should be therefore read as an act of resisting social formatting.

Artist and curator, Dimitrios Antonitsis is the founder of Hydra School Projects, a cutting edge international platform for the visual arts set up in an elementary school on the Greek island of Hydra. Accompanying the artist’s double exhibition project, a printed-matter conceived by Dimitrios Antonitsis will be published by Sabot in collaboration with the Museum of Art in Cluj-Napoca.

Objet – Zsolt Berszan
Galeria Bazis, etaj I
24 februarie – 28 aprilie 2012

În eseul intitulat ”Powers of Horror.

CAPACITOR II – Oliver Laric / Martin Westwood
Galeria Peles Empire, etaj I
până în 28 aprilie 2012

Copyright, and the idea of the authorship it ratifies, could well be on its last legs. Corporations are furiously fighting for their trademarks, protected patents and artistic works, but information seeps through their clutching hands like sand.

Whether or not copyright is justifiable is another story, but it is worth noting that it mimics the power structure of any ruling elite over the mass — be they those who own (corporations), those who know (religious bodies, academia), or those in place (governments). In this light, it might not come as a surprise that Laric has recently been looking at the history of iconoclasm, particularly during the Reformation. In the mid-16th and 17th centuries, reformers decreed that the use of religious images was idolatry, and thousands of pictures were destroyed or disfigured throughout Europe. Laric’s cast of a mauled-faced stone saint from Worcester cathedral (Icon (Worcester), 2009) questions the circumstances in which an image can or cannot be used, and thus points at what could be seen as a form of proto-copyright. It also embodies one of iconoclasm’s main paradoxes: the destruction of an image doesn’t lead to erasure but repurposing. A desecrated saint left on the cathedral’s wall for all to see is a potent propaganda tool, just as medieval justice made an example of traitors displaying their spiked heads on London Bridge’s Northern Gate.

The fabrication of Laric’s Icon (Worcester) chimes with one of the Peles Empire’s own concerns: a relationship between the two- and the three-dimensional defined by perpetual transformation. From object 1 — the Peles Castle in Romania — to the tourist postcards, the wallpapers, the ceramics and so on. Laric’s link to the iconoclast vignette starts with an image, a photograph found online, or in a book. This image is then turned in a digital 3D model, which is then printed in 3D, and cast to provide a mould for the lurid resins the artist or an assistant pours in during the making process’s last stage. The found image is consumed through its reinvention as a tangible object.
For Westwood, as for Laric and the Peles Empire, flatness can be a first step towards the sculptural — although the artist freely admits an awkward relationship to the idea of sculpture, burdened as it is by millennia of history. The unrecognizable is combined to the familiar in a wry experiment with textures’ suggestive power.
A capacitor is a small component used to store energy on an electronic circuit. It doesn’t perform any function other than allowing other components to fulfil their role. Laric, Westwood, and Peles Empire could perhaps be described as “capacitors” of the image. Probing its connection to power, shifting legal frameworks, and transformative displacement from the two- to the three-dimensional, the artists enable the coming-into-being of other images, subtly infused with the conditions of their own making.

Your brain on drums – atelier interactiv de percuţie improvizată, Asociaţia Arta Capoeira
spaţiul cultural Cercul Întreg
fiecare miercuri, 19.30 – 21.30 h

Drumsound rises on the air,
its throb, my heart.

A voice inside the beat says,
„I know you’re tired,
but come. This is the way.”
(Rumi)
